British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious road traffic collision in Ogun State, Nigeria, on Monday that left two people dead, local authorities and international outlets reported.
Police said Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he was described as stable.
The 36-year-old former world champion was travelling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Makun when the vehicle reportedly collided with a stationary truck, according to Nigerian media and eyewitness accounts.
Two of the vehicle’s occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, while Joshua was extracted from the wreckage and transported to medical care.
Videos circulating on social media showed bystanders and emergency responders assisting a visibly shaken Joshua as he was helped out of the damaged vehicle, with unverified footage capturing him wincing and being placed into a response vehicle.
International reaction on social media has been swift. Media commentator Piers Morgan posted on the platform X.
“Boxing champion Anthony Joshua has survived a deadly car crash in Nigeria that killed two people. He was a passenger in a Lexus when it reportedly smashed into a truck.” He added in a subsequent post: “This is him being carried out of his vehicle, clearly in agony. But he is said to be OK.” NDTV Sports
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by Nigerian authorities. Joshua was in the country during a brief period following his recent return to the ring, where he secured a knockout victory over Jake Paul earlier this month.
