Las Vegas police confirmed on Monday that the suspect in the mass shooting in the city was dead but, more than 50 people were killed in the worst mass shooting in modern American hisory, police said.
More than 200 people were injured in the mass shooting as performer Jason Aldean was on the stage, Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said at a news conference.
The gunman was identified by law enforcement officials as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, a resident of Mesquite, Nevada.
"We are comfortable that the primary aggressor has expired or passed away, and is no longer a threat," Sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Joseph Lombardo told reporters.
According to Lombaro, the suspect is believed to be a "local individual, he resides locally."
"We don’t know what his belief system was at this time," the sheriff noted.
Lombardo added that at that point police believed that the attacker was acting individually.
"Right now we believe that he is a sole aggressor," the officer said.
Earlier in the day, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said they were investigating reports of an active shooter near Mandalay Bay Casino. The shooting reportedly claimed over 50 lives, over 200 people received injuries. The perpetrator allegedly opened fire on the visitors of an open-air concert attended by tens of thousands of people from the 32nd floor of a hotel building nearby.
