Having thick, lustrous hair is no easy feat. If it was, about a thousand shampoo companies would be out of business. But the myth that truly great, healthy, thick and shiny hair can only be the result of being pumped full of products has led a lot of people astray. Sure, absolutely, there’s a tonne of great products that can take your hair from A to B, but most products are agents that aid, not remedy.
Products can only elevate your hair to a point. A great curl control serum will help keep your wild mane in check. A high-powered straightener will smooth out the kinks and leave your hair straight for the intended duration. But what a product can’t do is change the state of your mane. Not in the way diet can.
Consult with any nutritionist worth their (low-sodium) salt, and they’ll tell you that it all begins and ends with diet. I mean, sure, diet control is their bread and butter. But it doesn’t change the validity of that statement. Diet makes an incredible difference. And if it’s healthy, shiny hair that you’re after, this particular food makes much more of a difference than you might have imagined.
The innocuous walnut doesn’t come up in healthy skin, hair and body conversations quite as much as it should. You’ll hear about blueberries, chia seeds, bananas and eggs over and over for both (as you should–the benefits are limitless). But the omega-3 fatty acid-rich nut does wonders for both your hair and scalp:
There are ways to incorporate walnuts in your hair care routine outside of just ingestion–think hair oil, or even hair scrubs. But if you don’t have the time to acquire these things (or create them) and work them into your routine, just pop a couple every day. Your healthy head of hair will thank you.
