Award-winning actor Jonathan Pienaar, who was popular for his roles on TV shows like "Yizo Yizo", "Binnelanders" and "Generations", has died.

He also acted in "Falling Flats" as Bernard Farber and "The Rac-ist" as Solly.

The 63-year-old actor's wife, Rosana Maya Pienaar, confirmed the news on her social media platforms.

She wrote on Facebook: "Most beautiful man, unique soul … Like your wolves, you gave so much for so little … The world is a lesser place without you in it, my sadness too deep. Fly with angels my love."

In a separate post, she thanked the nurse who looked after Pienaar during his final days.

"Thank you, nurse Trevor, for being there for Jonny in his last days! You gave unconditionally and were a tremendous support to Jonny both mentally and physically … You are a warrior and a saint."

According to reports, Rosana said that Jonathan died of heart failure.

She said that Pienaar's health had declined ever since he suffered his first heart attack.

"I had a nurse looking after him. She said that he asked, 'Where am I?' and fell asleep again. When the nurse went to give him his medication, he had passed on," she told the online site.

Since the news broke, Mzansi has been sharing their condolences and tributes to Jonathan.

Actor Spaces paid a heart-warming tribute to the acting icon: "For over 30 years, Jonathan Pienaar carried the heartbeat of South African storytelling - a voice of grit, soul, and honesty.

"He gave everything to the craft, and the craft will forever carry his name. A storyteller, a teacher, a legend whose light continues to guide. Rest in Power, Jonathan Pienaar."

"This guy nailed each character he got. The industry has lost a legend. He has joined the ones that already passed before him; may he rest in peace. Condolences to the family, death be not proud," commented Tsholanang Mashoba on Facebook.
