WITH injuries beginning to surface at a crucial stage of the domestic season, Proteas coach Shukri Conrad may be forced to reconsider earlier squad decisions as alarm bells ring ahead of next month’s T20 World Cup.
Conrad has watched anxiously as two members of his 15-player World Cup squad suffered injuries during the final stretch of the Betway SA20, complicating preparations less than a month before the tournament.
IOL Sports Zaahier Adams reports that the latest concern involves Paarl Royals captain David Miller, who did not bat during his side’s defeat to Joburg Super Kings at Boland Park on Monday evening after injuring his groin while fielding.
Royals coach Trevor Penney suggested the injury may not be serious, but stressed that a clearer picture would only emerge following further examination.
“We're not sure if he tweaked his groin or if it's a bit stiff. So, he's in the ice bath, he's getting treatment. We didn't want to risk him today because he potentially could have ripped it,” Penney said.
“So hopefully he's going to be fine for the game in Pretoria. We don't know. Physio just was very precautionary, and he was a bit worried about it.
“But he's walking around, and hopefully touch wood he's going to be fine.”
Miller’s situation is being closely monitored, particularly after fellow middle-order batter Donovan Ferreira was ruled out of the remainder of the SA20 last Saturday.
Ferreira injured his shoulder while attempting to save a boundary during Joburg Super Kings’ clash against Pretoria Capitals at the Wanderers. The all-rounder fell awkwardly and later retired hurt after facing just one ball when he came out to bat. It is understood that he has suffered a fracture following a scan.
Neither Miller nor Ferreira has yet been ruled out of the T20 World Cup, but the timing of the injuries has inevitably sharpened focus on the Proteas’ depth and replacement options.
Conrad and national convenor of selectors Pat Moroney have already faced scrutiny following the omission of Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs from the original 15-man squad.
Stubbs, in particular, appears a like-for-like option for either Ferreira or Miller, having been a regular presence in South Africa’s T20 middle order over the past two seasons.
However, Stubbs was left out of the World Cup squad due to concerns that he had lost some explosiveness with the bat, especially early in his innings.
That trend has continued during the SA20, where the Sunrisers Eastern Cape captain has often opted to build rather than attack from the outset. While this approach has helped Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the top of the standings, Stubbs has managed 103 runs at a strike rate of 119.76 during the round-robin phase.
South Africa face West Indies in a three-match T20I series starting on Tuesday, January 27, at Boland Park in Paarl, before departing for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
With injuries mounting and limited time remaining, the coming days could prove decisive in shaping the Proteas’ final plans.
