The Springboks have received a timely boost ahead of their Castle Lager Rugby Championship title decider against Argentina at Twickenham, with experienced lock Lood de Jager called up to the squad in London.
De Jager joins as cover for Franco Mostert, who remained in South Africa following a family bereavement. The 31-year-old, who picked up a niggle during the Boks’ record 43-10 victory over the All Blacks in Wellington, has fully recovered and is ready for selection.
The team departed Johannesburg on Sunday evening and touched down in London early on Monday morning. Spirits remain high in camp as South Africa prepare to defend the title they lifted last year — their first Rugby Championship crown since 2019.
Currently sitting top of the standings with 15 points, the Boks hold a slender one-point lead over the All Blacks. Australia trails in third with 11 points, while Argentina occupy the bottom spot on nine points. Saturday’s clash will therefore decide the competition.
Speaking from London, head coach Rassie Erasmus stressed the importance of the week ahead.
“The journey to London was good, and with it being an overnight flight, the players rested well on the plane and look fresh,” Erasmus said. “The time zone is similar to South Africa, which makes things easier. We’ll manage the squad carefully this week to ensure they’re at their best come Saturday.”
Erasmus acknowledged Argentina’s challenge while reminding his team of the historic opportunity at hand.
“This is a massive game, and we know the Pumas will come out firing. But we also have the chance to win back-to-back Rugby Championships for the first time in history. That’s all the motivation we need.”
On De Jager’s inclusion, Erasmus extended his support to Mostert and welcomed the return of another seasoned campaigner.
“We all feel deeply for Franco and wish him strength during this difficult time,” he said. “Fortunately, Lood has recovered fully. His experience and leadership will be invaluable in such an important week for us.”
The Boks will have a recovery day on Monday before resuming training on Tuesday as they gear up for Saturday’s showdown at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
