Rethabile Koekoe has dreams of playing at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London one day.
The Kimberley-born Sol Plaatje University (SPU) student says that her cricket journey began in primary school when coaches first introduced the game. Something stirred inside, and from that moment, her love for the sport has never wavered.
Rethabile’s game has gone from strength to strength. She fondly tells of her proudest moment that came in 2023 when the Northern Cape Heat Ladies team were crowned Pool B champions. She says that this milestone remains close to her heart.
Being able to perform optimally during a game is important, and to achieve this, she prepares herself mentally by using positive affirmations, focusing on confidence, and visualising success. She imagines herself achieving her goals and performing at her best, a process that helps her turn nerves into motivation.
The young student describes herself as an introvert, who is goal-driven and hardworking; qualities that guide her both on the cricket field and in life. One thing she wants the Kimberley crowd to know is that she always goes after what she wants and never gives up until she achieves it.
As for academics, she says that her time at SPU has been an incredible journey – from the warm welcome she received and the growth she has experienced both academically and personally. She insists that being part of the university community has not only enriched her studies but has also allowed her to deepen her passion for cricket.
Rethabile says that for her, cricket goes beyond mere competition. It is about resilience, personal growth and striving to inspire others through hard work and commitment.
