Kimberley’s Sol Plaatje University turns 12 this year, and seeing as it’s the institution’s birthday month, the varsity has invited the public to be part of the celebrations at SPU’s Birthday Colour Run 2025. The event takes place on Saturday, August 30, at the SPU Sports Precinct.

And for those still trying to decide if they want to take part in what would appear to be just another “fun run”, it’s worth considering that though the event started as a campus fun run has evolved to become the Northern Cape’s top community race; a race that attracted over 900 participants last year.

This year, SPU has promised to go even bigger, with bold colour, family-friendly vibes and a strong message of unity, health and inclusion.

According to the University, “The SPU Birthday Colour Run brings together athletes from across our neighbouring borders and is a flagship event in the athletics fraternity. The event has gained popularity with entries doubling in the past year from around 500 to just over 900 entries.”

This year, the event will include a race for everyone, no matter your level of fitness or enthusiasm. There’s a 5km, 10km, and 21.1km race, while later on, a prize-giving ceremony and lucky draws are up for grabs.

Age categories start from Junior (15-19 years old) to Sub-Veteran (35-39 years old), Veteran (those who are 40-49), Master (aged 50-59), Grand Masters (60-69 years of age), and Great Grand Master.

There’s no time to lose, online entries have been open since August 1 2025 and will close on August 25 2025. Manual entries will take place from August 18-22, 2025. However, note that these will ONLY be available between 9 am and 4 pm at SPU North Campus, Luka Jantjie House (10 Sol Plaatje Drive, Civic Centre).

So, fun-loving Kimberlites, mark your calendars for Saturday, August 31 2025, and tell your friends – even friends from neighbouring towns to join in, because whether athletes and participants choose to run, walk, cheer or simply show up to support, the Sol Plaatje University Colour Run promotes healthy, active living in a fun and inclusive way.

And if you're not "into running", there's good news, because a statement on the university's website reads: "Walking is encouraged and fully welcomed. There will also be a birthday party for children, because after all, it’s a celebration and the whole community is invited."

Remember, the event is open to everyone, including you!
