ONE OF Kimberley’s most cherished sporting traditions is back as the William Pescod Hockey Club (WPHC) gears up to host the William Pescod Memorial Tournament from August 8-10.

The tournament will be hosted at the Sol Plaatje University Astro Turf and Multi-Purpose Hall.

Now in its 43rd year, WPHC has long been a beacon of both athletic and academic excellence. Founded in 1982, the club is deeply rooted in community spirit and is especially proud of its many scholar-athletes who balance their educational commitments with their passion for the game.

The annual tournament stands as more than just a competitive showcase. It serves as a heartfelt tribute to former WPHC players who have passed on, honouring the lives and legacies of Patrick Moses, Alistair Fredericks, Peter Adams, Micheline Tricam, Tyra Hannie, Clayton Fredericks and Finley Brooker — figures who helped shape the identity of the club and inspired generations of players.

This year’s event promises an exciting line-up of youth and senior teams from Kimberley, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein coming together in a weekend that emphasises sportsmanship, development, and community engagement.

“As a community-based club with a strong focus on youth and education, this tournament is a cornerstone of what we stand for,” said a WPHC spokesperson. “It’s not just about hockey — it’s about celebrating a legacy, bringing people together, and investing in the future of our young athletes.”

Sponsorship appeal

However, to make the event a success, WPHC is seeking sponsorship and financial assistance. The club is appealing to local businesses, institutions, and individuals to support this impactful event through sponsorships, donations, or in-kind contributions.

In return, sponsors will receive high-visibility exposure through branding opportunities at the venue, social media mentions, and public acknowledgements during the tournament.

“This is more than just an investment in sport,” added the spokesperson. “It’s a commitment to education, community development, and the legacy of excellence we strive to uphold.”
