A wave of fresh talent is being nurtured in the community following the launch of the Spakes Soccer Development Centre just over a month ago.

Since opening on April 5, the programme has enrolled 45 children across various age groups, including Under-7, Under-9, Under-11, and Under-13 categories. Designed for youngsters who aren't yet part of a football club, the initiative offers structured training, mentorship, and a path into the sport.

“There are so many talented kids in our communities who just need the right platform,” said founder and coach Kagisho “Spakes” Matile. “We created this programme for those who might be overlooked or don’t have access to clubs or academies. This is their chance to shine.”

Training sessions are held every Saturday at Vuyolwethu High School from 10am, and new players are welcome. Parents are encouraged to come and see the skills and discipline being developed on the field.

Programme manager Mbulelo Jack said the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s incredible to see how quickly the children are picking up skills, learning teamwork, and growing more confident,” he said. “We’re just getting started.”

Looking ahead, the Spakes Soccer Development Centre hopes to open even bigger doors for its young players. One of the goals is to link promising talents with football academies around the country, exposing them to advanced coaching and competitive environments.

Coach Kagisho emphasised that the centre is about more than just football. “We’re building character, discipline, and hope. This is about life skills as much as it is about sport.”

With growing numbers of youngsters lacing up their boots every weekend, the Spakes Soccer Development Centre is quickly becoming a pillar of positive change in the community.
