The championship is South Africa’s leading school-level football tournament, launched in 2004 by the Motsepe Foundation in partnership with Sanlam and the Department of Basic Education. Beyond the winner’s purse, the competition is designed to promote youth development, leadership, and community upliftment through sport.
For those who may still be unfamiliar with what the Kay Motsepe Schools Football Championship is all about, here’s a rundown. The championship, historically includes three key divisions: Under-19 Boys, Under-14 Boys, and Under-14 Girls.
Each year, over 13,000 schools from across South Africa take part. The winning schools receive substantial prizes specifically for infrastructure development: The Under-19 Boys Champions stand to win R3 million, and the Under-14 Boys and Under-14 Girls winners R1 million apiece.
As stated earlier, these funds are intended to improve school facilities and promote quality education.
Last year’s finals were held at Bergsig Academy in Rustenburg, and Northern Academy (Limpopo) won the Under-19 Boys title, defeating Eletsa Secondary (North West) 2-1. Meanwhile, Queenswood Laerskool (Gauteng) claimed victory in the Under-14 Boys category, while it was the Under-14 girls from Lwazi Primary (Western Cape) who triumphed in the Under-14 Girls division.
The championship was the spawning ground for some of South Africa’s brightest soccer talent, and the tournament has already helped nurture some of South Africa’s top footballers. Among its notable alumni are Ronwen Williams, current Bafana Bafana captain, and Percy Tau, forward for Al Ahly and former English Premier League player.
The Kay Motsepe Schools Football Championship continues to provide the opportunity for young players to combine athletic excellence with educational empowerment.
