Jacobsdal powerhouse Landboudal delivered an impressive performance on the national stage at the 2025 South African Junior Tug-of-War Championships, held in Mossel Bay from March 20 to 22.

Last Friday, the team competed in the 520kg mixed category, which consists of four boys and four girls under 18 years old – an internationally recognised weight class. Against fierce competition from 28 teams, Landboudal secured a bronze medal, which is a testament to their strength and teamwork.

Saturday saw Landboudal competing in the 560kg boys’ category, another internationally recognised division, where they faced off against 19 teams. The squad put in a determined effort, finishing just outside the medals in fourth place – an impressive performance.

Global Aspirations and Fund-raising Efforts

Following their success on the national stage, the Landboudal them is now setting their sights on international competition, with plans to participate in the GENSB tournament in the Netherlands at the end of August and the Junior World Championships in England in early September.

However, the cost per team member for these trips is substantial – R60,000 per participant – which has led the team to launch several fund-raising initiatives.

One of the major fundraising efforts is the Diamond Rush Raffle, where participants have the chance to win a 1.25-carat diamond worth R50,000.

Tickets are selling for R200 each, with the grand draw set for May 10, 2025.

The funds raised will help cover travel and competition expenses, ensuring that Landboudal’s young athletes have the opportunity to represent South Africa on the world stage.

Coach Praises Team’s Dedication

Reflecting on the team’s performance, the Landboudal coach Johan Koen expressed immense pride in the athletes’ dedication and hard work.

“I am incredibly proud of every puller in our team. Their commitment and determination have brought us this far, and we are excited for the journey ahead.

“There’s still a lot of hard work to be done before August, but I have no doubt that we will be ready,” Koen said.

With their recent success fuelling their ambitions, Landboudal is gearing up for an exciting year ahead, hoping to make their mark on the global tug-of-war stage.

Anyone interested in purchasing a raffle ticket or contributing to the team’s sponsorship can reach out to coach Koen at 076 933 0991.
