IN A SIGNIFICANT gesture of appreciation for their service, the Northern Cape MEC for Coghsta, Bentley Vass, handed over two houses to military veterans in Ritchie and Ronaldsvlei this week.

The handover ceremony was attended by the acting executive mayor of Sol Plaatje Municipality, councillor Diteko Dioka.

The initiative is the result of a joint effort between the Department of Human Settlements and the Department of Military Veterans.

MEC Vass emphasised the department's commitment to addressing the housing backlog and ensuring that military veterans are prioritised in the province's housing plans.

This gesture underscores the government's appreciation for the sacrifices made by military veterans and its dedication to supporting their welfare.

To qualify for a housing benefit as a military veteran, you must:

  • Be a South African citizen or permanent resident, legally competent to contract
  • Meet specific income criteria (varies depending on the programme)
  • Be registered as a military veteran in the Department of Military Veterans' database
