A VIOLENT altercation over a cigarette in Victoria West has ended with a suspended sentence for a 34-year-old man who stabbed a teenager during the dispute.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the incident unfolded on September 19, 2024, when a 17-year-old boy was attacked during a confrontation with the accused, Klaas Babers. What began as a disagreement quickly turned violent when Babers pulled out a knife and stabbed the teen.
The victim, who was accompanied by a family member, reported the assault to the police, leading to the swift arrest of Babers. He remained behind bars while the investigation and court proceedings played out.
After months in custody, Babers was recently convicted in the Victoria West Regional Court of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. However, despite the severity of the offence, he was handed a six-year prison sentence that was wholly suspended for five years - meaning he will not serve any jail time unless he is convicted of a similar offence during that period.
The Pixley ka Seme district commissioner, Major-General Nomana Mtukushe, commended Detective Constable Priscilla Makoli for her “exemplary investigative work” and ensuring that the case was thoroughly prepared for court.
Sergeant Shemane said the police have reiterated their focus on tackling contact crimes, particularly those that impact vulnerable groups such as women and children.
