AS YEAR-END celebrations gather momentum today across the Northern Cape, the police have issued a firm warning to residents and business owners to steer clear of illegal fireworks trading and irresponsible use, saying festive cheer should not come at the cost of public safety.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has intensified its Safer Festive Season operations across the province, and fireworks are now firmly in the spotlight as New Year’s Eve approaches. Police say the misuse of fireworks poses serious risks not only to those lighting them, but also to children, motorists, animals and vulnerable community members.

Under the Explosives Act and municipal safety regulations, fireworks may not be discharged within 500 metres of petrol stations, hospitals, clinics, old-age homes or animal welfare facilities. Police have also reiterated that directing fireworks at people, animals, vehicles or buildings is illegal, as it can result in severe injuries and costly damage to property and infrastructure.

Parents and guardians have been urged to take responsibility during celebrations, with police warning that unsupervised children handling fireworks face a high risk of injury. The law explicitly prohibits the sale of fireworks to anyone under the age of 16, and adults may be held criminally liable if minors in their care are found in possession of or using fireworks unlawfully.

Police have also cautioned the public against buying fireworks from street vendors or hawkers, stressing that only authorised dealers displaying valid SAPS-approved permits are legally allowed to sell them. Unlawful trading and unsafe use will trigger immediate police intervention.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane said enforcement operations will continue throughout the festive period, with officers ready to act against anyone flouting the law.

Police have appealed to residents to celebrate responsibly and help ensure a safe and peaceful end to the year for all communities across the province.
