IN A RESOLUTE stand against the pervasive issues of gender-based violence and crime, Major-General Charlotte Makgari, Frances Baard SAPS district commissioner, spearheaded the launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign with a multi-disciplinary initiative dubbed Operation Shanela II on November 25.

The operation unfolded along the N12 national road, supplemented by strategic vehicle checkpoints (VCPs) in Galeshewe, Kagisho, and Roodepan.

Operational goals centred around combating several pressing societal issues, including gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), drug trafficking, human trafficking, stock theft, and general criminality.

During this robust initiative, law enforcement officers conducted thorough stop-and-search actions, resulting in 1,209 individuals being scrutinised and 554 vehicles being stopped for inspection.

The operation also saw the distribution of awareness pamphlets focused on GBVF, trafficking in persons, and substance abuse, aimed not only at informing the public but also at empowering them to take an active role in the fight against these critical issues.

The operation did not stop at just awareness. Authorities issued 45 fines, amounting to a hefty R46,150, and took decisive action by closing two illicit shebeens.

Furthermore, firearms were accounted for at various checkpoints, contributing to a holistic approach to public safety during this critical period.

Major-General Makgari commended all the participating members for their unwavering dedication to the cause, reinforcing a powerful message to all: “No to gender-based violence; yes to dignity, inclusion, and safety for all.”

Her speech resonated with a call to action for the community, urging them to break the silence surrounding violence against women and children and to report any criminal activities to the police.

This operation marks just the beginning of the police's 16 Days of Activism campaign, which aims to elevate awareness and foster community involvement in the fight against GBV and crime, setting the tone for action and solidarity in the month ahead.

The operation targeted GBVF, drug trafficking, human trafficking, stock theft, traffic violations, and general criminality.
