A STRONG show of force from law enforcement swept through Kimberley’s central business district this week, as police and government departments joined forces to clamp down on crime, illegal trading, and non-compliance.
The large-scale operation – led by Northern Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola and Francis Baard district commissioner Major-General Charlotte Makgare – brought together a wide range of agencies, including SAPS specialised units, the Traffic Department, Environmental Health officials from Sol Plaatje Municipality, the Department of Correctional Services, and the Department of Labour.
The high-density operation, held on November 6, formed part of ongoing efforts to “stamp the authority of the state” and restore order in key parts of the city. Several known hot spots were cordoned off and searched as officers moved through the CBD, checking vehicles, traders, and businesses for compliance.
The police confiscated dangerous weapons and seized counterfeit branded clothing during the sweep, while municipal health inspectors closed three shops that failed to meet environmental standards. Street vendors were warned for trading violations, and motorists were fined for a range of traffic offences. Labour officials also issued prohibition notices to non-compliant employers.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane confirmed that the operation targeted criminal activity, drug trafficking, and illegal trading, with a focus on reclaiming public spaces and ensuring safety in the city centre.
Lieutenant-General Otola encouraged residents to support police efforts by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity. She reiterated that the SAPS in the Northern Cape “remains resolute in its commitment to dismantle all forms of criminality and to stamp the authority of the state”.
