TWO MEN who brutally murdered a Victoria West resident during a late-night robbery have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms by the Northern Cape High Court.

The court handed down a 22-year sentence to Willy Jubell, 55, and 25 years plus an additional year for theft to Elliot Jooste, 39, for the killing of 31-year-old Tshepo Mmadi. The attack took place on April 24, 2021, when Mmadi was on his way home after visiting his girlfriend.

According to police reports, Mmadi was ambushed by three men who stabbed him before fleeing with his belongings. He was declared dead at the scene by local emergency services.

All three suspects were arrested shortly after the crime. While Jubell and Jooste were convicted and sentenced, the third accused was released. The court also ruled that the pair are unfit to possess firearms.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam confirmed the sentences, describing them as “hefty” and a reflection of the seriousness of the crime.

The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, welcomed the outcome and commended Detective Sergeant Basil Abrahams for his “meticulous investigation” that secured the convictions.

The police have urged community members to continue supporting efforts against crime by participating in the online “Rate Our Service” survey and by reporting criminal activity via the MySAPS App or the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
