A joint operation between the South African Police Service and other agencies has led to a significant crackdown on vehicle crimes in Kuruman and Mothibistad.

The intelligence-driven operation, conducted on August 26-27, 2025, involved the Provincial Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, Visible Policing, Department of Home Affairs, Ga-Segonyana Traffic Services, insurance companies Hollard and Santam, the Insurance Crime Bureau, DataDot, and the Road Accident Fund.

During the operation, a multi-disciplinary team inspected scrapyards, second-hand dealerships, backyard mechanics, and panel beaters. A roadblock was also set up in Kuruman and Hotazel, where 490 vehicles were stopped, and 34 traffic fines worth R84,200 were issued.

The operation resulted in the seizure of two stolen vehicles: a Toyota chassis and cab reported stolen in Bedfordview in June 2023, and a blue Volkswagen with tampered identification reported stolen in Villieria in April 2018.

"The SAPS will continue conducting compliance inspections across the John Taolo Gaetsewe District in an effort to curb vehicle-related crimes," the police stated.

Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, Acting District Commissioner of John Taolo Gaetsewe, commended the team for their diligent work and expressed appreciation for the strong cooperation between the private sector and the police.

This operation highlights the commitment of the SAPS to tackle vehicle-related crimes and maintain road safety in the region.
