Cosmic Echoes: Honouring Ouma Katrina Esau in a celebration of language and culture

SOL PLAATJE University (SPU) is set to host a significant celebration of Women's Month on Saturday, August 9. The event will feature a public lecture honouring Ouma Katrina Esau, who is a national treasure and language activist who dedicated her life to preserving the N|uu language and Khoi-San heritage.

The public lecture will coincide with the official opening of the Cosmic Echoes: Shared Sky Indigenous Art Exhibition, which will showcase the wisdom of the stars as seen through Indigenous eyes. The exhibition will remain on display at SPU from August 9 to September 13. This collaborative celebration is presented in partnership with the SKA Observatory (SKAO), the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), and Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

The event reflects this year's theme: "Voices of Empowerment: Celebrating Women's Wisdom, Creativity and Leadership."

The day's programme will include:

  • Dynamic panel discussion: "Women in Science and the Arts" featuring leading scientists, artists, and educators
  • Live art and performance moments: Enjoy captivating performances and art displays
  • Interactive reflection and message wall: Share your thoughts and reflections on women's empowerment
  • Guided tour of the Cosmic Echoes exhibition: Insights from the curator and participating artists

The event will take place on Saturday, August , 2025, at the Sol Plaatje University, with opening remarks by Prof Debra Meyer, SPU Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal.

This event is all about embracing the power of women and preserving our rich cultural heritage. With a dynamic panel discussion, live art and performances, and an exclusive exhibition, you'll be inspired by the stories and achievements of women who are shaping our world.
