A MOTHER and her one-year-old son died after their shack caught fire in Greenpoint on Monday morning.

It is believed that the father is in critical condition in hospital.

A community member said one of the older children managed to drag the parents out of the burning shanty.

“The mother went back inside to fetch the baby. A cupboard that had caught alight apparently fell on top of her, and both she and her son were trapped inside.”

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the Kimberley SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes Unit had opened an inquest into the deaths.

“The shack reportedly caught fire and burned down in Soga Street, Greenpoint, during the early hours of June 2. A 35-year-old mother and her one-year-old son perished in the fire,” said Shemane.

He added that the police were investigating the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Anyone with information that can assist the investigation is urged to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Moagi Mokatsane, on 082 302 0407, or call the SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS app.

“All information received will be treated confidentially,” said Shemane.
