A 19-YEAR-OLD teen from Ulco will spend the next nine years behind bars after being convicted of raping a woman while she slept in a friend’s home.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane said the Barkly West Regional Court handed down the sentence to Gara Ncube after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman during a gathering in Ulco West.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, November 5, 2023, when the victim had been socialising with friends. After growing tired, she was offered a room to rest in. During the night, she was jolted awake to find Ncube raping her. She managed to fight him off and alert others before he fled the scene.
The matter was reported to the police in Delportshoop, and the case was later assigned to the Galeshewe SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. The investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Butinyane Letimela, pieced together a strong case that led to Ncube’s arrest and eventual conviction.
In addition to his prison sentence, Ncube was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The Frances Baard district commissioner, Major-General Charlotte Makgari, praised Warrant Officer Letimela for his meticulous work in securing the conviction and sentence.
The Northern Cape SAPS has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to fighting gender-based violence and has urged the public to report any criminal activity through the MySAPS app or by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
