THE DEPARTMENT of Correctional Services has confirmed the suspension of a high-ranking official at Kimberley Correctional Services.
It is believed that the official was suspended after rape allegations were made against him by a subordinate.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane confirmed that the Kimberley SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit was investigating a rape case.
He added that no arrest had been made.
“The investigation has been finalised and the docket has been sent to the senior public prosecutor for a decision. The suspect will be arrested and charged if the National Prosecuting Authority decides to go ahead with the prosecution,” said Shemane.
Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo declined to elaborate on the reasons for the suspension.
“This is an internal matter between the employer and the employee, we are not in a position to disclose further details at this stage,” said Nxumalo.
“Please be assured that the department has measures in place to ensure continuity of services. Where officials are temporarily unavailable, alternative arrangements are made to maintain operational responsibilities,” he added.
