IN A SHOW of unity and strength, women in law enforcement from across the John Taolo Gaetsewe District gathered for an impactful session focused on gender-based violence (GBV), as senior SAPS leadership led an engagement under the banner “Driving Success Together”.

The Northern Cape’s top cop, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, joined by senior provincial SAPS leadership and government departments, spearheaded the initiative aimed at empowering women within the ranks of the police force. The message was clear: no woman should suffer in silence.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane said that the event brought together representatives from the departments of Transport, Safety and Liaison, Social Development and Correctional Services, the National Prosecuting Authority, and the district Community Police Forum – all lending their voice and support to ending GBV. Together, they echoed the call for solidarity, strength, and action.

Female officers were reminded of their worth and encouraged to break free from abusive situations, no matter the circumstances. Attendees were urged to prioritise their safety over societal pressure or financial dependency – two common barriers that keep many trapped in harmful relationships.

Beyond motivation, the gathering served as a platform for empowerment. Officers were encouraged to invest in their personal growth and skills development – vital tools in the fight for both professional and personal independence.

The event also reaffirmed the SAPS’s ongoing commitment to creating safe communities where women and children are protected – not just in their homes, but within the ranks of law enforcement as well.

The public is reminded that support is always within reach. Any criminal activity or abuse can be reported anonymously via the MySAPS app or by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

The event was a multi-departmental effort that included the NPA.
