A 44-YEAR-old Colesberg man will spend the next decade behind bars after a brutal assault and kidnapping that led to the rape of his former partner shocked the Kuyasa community.

The man, whose reign of terror unfolded on the evening of July 29, 2024, tracked down his ex-girlfriend at her home in Kuyasa. Armed with a rock, he struck the 33-year-old woman on the head before forcibly abducting her and dragging her to his house. There, the nightmare escalated as he raped her.

A swift and thorough police investigation led to the suspect’s arrest on August 5, just a week after the attack. He remained in custody as the justice system took its course.

This week, on March 18, the Colesberg Regional Court brought the case to a close, with the man receiving a 10-year sentence for rape, five years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and an additional two years for kidnapping. His name has also been added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the successful prosecution marks another victory in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), thanks in large part to the determined efforts of police investigators from the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences unit in De Aar. Their tireless work ensured that a dangerous man was taken off the streets - and that a survivor received justice.
