A PATROL on the N12 turned into a high-value takedown when the police swooped on a truck packed with illicit cigarettes worth an estimated half-a-million rand in Kimberley.
Acting on intelligence, officers from the Kimberley Public Order Policing unit, Platoon 5, zeroed in on a truck suspected of transporting contraband. Their surveillance efforts paid off when they spotted the vehicle at a petrol station near Shell Ultra City along the N12 on March 14.
A search uncovered numerous boxes of illicit cigarettes hidden inside, leading to the immediate confiscation of the cargo and the vehicle as it was allegedly used in the commission of a crime.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that despite the significant haul, no arrests have been made as the police continue to investigate the origins and intended destination of the contraband.
Law enforcement officials have called on the community to continue “being the ears and eyes of the police” and assist in the fight against crime by reporting suspicious activities.
