A DAY of camaraderie, competition and community spirit unfolded at the 8SAI Army Base in Upington as the Northern Cape police hosted their much-anticipated Provincial Sports Day under the lively theme, “Get ready to play, cheer and shine”.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the event commenced early on Thursday morning, when officers from all five districts laced up their running shoes for a 5km fun run before diving into a full line-up of sporting activities, including volleyball, darts, cricket, netball, tug-of-war, bowls, rugby and soccer.
Brigadier Gilroy Tait, the acting provincial head for Human Resource and Development, set the tone for the day, emphasising the positive impact of sports on officer performance, morale, and dedication to their service.
The event wasn’t just about athleticism - it was a celebration of teamwork, wellness, and the police service’s commitment to fostering strong community ties through sport.
Special recognition was given to Sergeant Shonnie Pule from Deben police station, who recently made the province proud by securing third place in the women’s category of the 42.2km Balwin Pretoria Marathon. ZF Mgcawu district commissioner Major-General Monica Sebili, who was representing Northern Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Koliswa, congratulated Pule and all other officers who showcased their sporting talents at the national level.
Encouraging officers to reignite the sporting culture within the SAPS, Major-General Sebili highlighted the role of fitness in maintaining both mental and physical resilience. She noted that sport is more than just a game - it’s a key part of the SAPS wellness programme and a way to build stronger bonds among colleagues and the communities they serve.
As the day drew to a close, top-performing teams and individuals were honoured with medals and trophies, a testament to their dedication and competitive spirit. Lieutenant-Colonel Anette Moses, speaking on behalf of the Provincial Organising Committee, extended heartfelt gratitude to all supporting stakeholders, including the ZFM District Office, the South African National Defence Force, and the Department of Correctional Services, for their contributions in making the event a resounding success.
With the echoes of cheers and laughter still fresh in the air, SAPS officers left the sports ground having showcased both their competitive spirit and teamwork, reinforcing the role of sports in promoting camaraderie and well-being within the force.
