A NIGHT of drinking ended in bloodshed when a Vosburg teenager fatally stabbed a man and assaulted his girlfriend. Now, 19-year-old Byrone Maritz will spend the next 16 years behind bars.
The Carnarvon Regional Court handed down the sentence on February 18, following his conviction for the murder of 40-year-old Henry Williams and the assault of his girlfriend.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock, the incident unfolded in the early hours of July 27 last year. Maritz, Williams, and the victim’s girlfriend were socialising when an argument spiralled into violence. Maritz stabbed Williams and turned his aggression on the woman, leaving her injured.
Maritz was subsequently arrested and this week sentenced for murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Detective Constable Shanton Thompson, who spearheaded the investigation, was praised by SAPS management for his dedication in securing the conviction.
