THE DISTRICT commissioner of ZF Mgcawu, Major-General Monica Sebili, spearheaded a law enforcement operation targeting the illegal sale of liquor and other violations in the Upington area. Despite ongoing police interventions, non-compliance persists, prompting intensified action.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela, the operation took place in the Rosedale and Paballelo areas. It involved members from the ZFM District Office, Rosedale SAPS, Paballelo SAPS, Upington K9 unit, Public Order Police (POP) unit, ZFM District CPF, Rosedale CPF, and the Environmental Health Inspector.
Officers conducted compliance inspections at four tuck shops, resulting in the confiscation of liquor and expired food worth R18,937. Three tuck shops were shut down for non-compliance, while another owner received a R1,500 fine.
Two individuals were arrested for violating the Northern Cape Liquor Act. The police also intervened in incidents of public drinking outside a tavern in Paballelo.
In an operation in the Kalahari region, the Rietfontein SAPS raided two premises, arresting a suspect for dealing in dagga valued at R4,800 and illegal liquor trading. The liquor was also confiscated.
Major-General Sebili issued a stern warning to criminals, emphasising that police efforts will be intensified to curb unlawful activities and restrict criminal operations.
