A MULTI-disciplinary law enforcement team cracked down on illegal mining operations in Kleinzee in the Namakwa District, apprehending eight suspects during a disruptive operation on February 9.

The arrests were carried out as part of Operation Vala Umgodi, an ongoing initiative to combat illicit mining activities in the Northern Cape.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane explained that the arrests followed intelligence-led investigations at identified illegal mining hot-spots

He said that the pro-active and combating teams executed a targeted operation based on the gathered intelligence, leading to the arrest of eight individuals.

The suspects, aged between 28 and 54, now face charges of illegal mining, trespassing, and being in the country unlawfully.

The police also confiscated mining equipment believed to have been used in the illicit activities.

Sergeant Shemane emphasised that the police have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling the growing scourge of illegal mining in the province and are calling on the public to assist by reporting suspicious activities.

He noted that members of the public can report anonymously via Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or through the MySAPS app.

“All information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality,” he assured.
