WITH every month, even February, proving longer than our budget’s ability to stretch, is it any wonder that South Africans are looking for better deals?
From grocery shopping to service providers Mzansi’s hard-pressed consumers are looking to get more bang for their buck.
And sometimes that quest for the perfect bargain turns up a delightful surprise.
For example, at the end of February, the Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX was named one of three finalists in the Best Budget Car category (for vehicles under R300k). This happened in October 2024. But on February 27, the top honour was bestowed at the gala event held at Waterfall City Park at Midrand’s Mall of Africa.
As it turns out, this is the seventh occasion Suzuki has triumphed in this category and the fifth time it’s won it with the Swift.
Suzuki Auto South Africa didn’t hesitate and proudly announced that the new fourth-generation Swift won its category at the 2025 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards. The awards, sponsored by Absa, recognise the best new-vehicle purchases across 13 segments in the local market.

The fourth-generation Suzuki Swift is South Africa's best-selling passenger vehicle for January, with 2,628 units sold, according to naamsa. This popular, value-packed AB-segment hatchback appeals to many South African drivers due to its stylish design, fun driving experience, modern technology, and yes, you’ve guessed it, its affordability.
Priced from R264,900, the award-winning 1.2 GLX is particularly appealing as it comes specced to the max with modcons such as automatic LED projector headlamps and L-shaped LED daytime running lights, keyless entry with push-button start, cruise control, automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel.
There’s also a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Topped off with a rearview camera and Suzuki’s Vehicle Alerts system with fuel consumption monitoring, this flagship offering in the all-new Swift range proves you don’t have to spend a fortune to feel like a million bucks behind the wheel.
As with all Swift models across the range, the 1.2 GLX is fitted with various best-in-class safety features including six airbags, ABS brakes with EBD, Brake Assist Function, Electronic Stability Programme, and rear ISOFIX anchors. In addition, all occupants have access to three point seatbelts (two front, three rear) with audible/visual reminders.
"Suzuki Auto is honoured to be recognised by the 2025 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards," says Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager of Suzuki Auto South Africa.
"Winning the Best Budget Car category with the new Swift is a proud achievement and a testament to Suzuki’s ongoing commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality vehicles. This recognition is shared with every Suzuki owner, supporter and team member who believes in our brand. Thank you for your trust and support – this award is for you."
Meanwhile, while the fourth-generation Swift took centre stage for Suzuki Auto South Africa, the Baleno 1.5 GLX Auto earned recognition as the runner-up in the Compact Hatch category. Similarly, the Fronx 1.5 GLX Auto secured second place in the Budget Crossover category.
