Tyla’s name has been tossed into fashion convos more times than a sequin at a Y2K party, and it’s easy to see why.

The Grammy winner has become a style darling with looks that balance Gen Z flair and global pop-star polish. She’s been compared to Halle Berry in her Sharon Stone era, with that confident, curve-hugging edginess, and Aaliyah, whose signature style of crop tops, baggy jeans, and slick R&B cool still defines streetwear culture today.

Tyla’s performance at Coachella featured a green and purple bra top paired with ultra-low-rise bedazzled jean shorts, complete with tassels.

She accessorised with a body chain necklace and opted for two different pairs of shoes: first, zebra print Dolce & Gabbana booties, which - honestly - was the star of the show and then knee-high brown boots.

Naturally, comparisons came flying in. Thousands of fans and fashion followers praised Tyla for what they believed was a nod to Britney Spears’ legendary 2001 VMAs “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance.

Spears’ look included a jungle-toned bra top, hip-hugging shorts, glistening accessories, and don’t forget the iconic python that set the bar for early-2000s stage glam. On the surface, Tyla’s outfit ticked many of the same boxes: colourful, minimal, sexy, and performance-ready.

Tyla's recent Coachella outfit has sparked a debate about whether she was paying tribute to Britney Spears’ infamous 2001 VMA look.

However, Tyla was quick to address these comparisons. On X, she revealed that the outfit was not meant to reference Britney’s legendary look: it wasn’t that deep.

She wrote, “Love her, but I just thought the outfit was fly. No inspo.” That shut down the speculation... or so she thought.

Despite Tyla’s clarification, her comments didn’t sit well with some of Britney’s fans. One user took to social media, accusing Tyla of being a “copycat”

Tyla responded with: “Personally, I think you should [shut the f*ck up].”

Well then.

One X user commented: "Britney is without a doubt an icon and inspiration, but besides the colour scheme, there was no similarities whatsoever."

Another user wrote, "No because if she was to be inspired by Britney we all know she would do way better than what she's wearing... either way her outfit is a cute summer moment."

"Britney is not big in Africa, most people are familiar with the name and that she’s a singer, however, it doesn’t go beyond that.

"Only a few of us 'listen' to her or 'know' her music. Africans gravitate towards black artists most of the time. That’s why we believe Tyla," commented another.
