IT'S THAT time of the year again – the sun's shining, the sea's calling, and you're itching to get away! As you're busy booking accommodation and planning your dream holiday, don't forget about your furry family members. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and overlook your pets, but with a bit of planning, you can ensure they're happy and safe while you're soaking up the sun.

Take a deep breath, relax, and let's get your pet's holiday plans sorted.

A safe and sound plan

If you're heading out of town, don't leave your pets alone for long periods. Instead, book them into a reputable kennel or arrange for a trusted pet-sitter to visit your home regularly. Make sure they have access to food, fresh water, shelter, and transport in case of an emergency.

Kennel tips

If you're opting for boarding kennels, book early to avoid disappointment. Confirm their requirements for vaccinations, deworming, and flea/tick treatments, and ensure your pet's vaccinations are up to date. The SPCA Kimberley has boarding kennels. Call their office for availability on 053 831 7625.

Identification is key

Ensure your pet's ID tag and collar are secure, or that their microchip is registered with your updated contact details. This increases the chances of a happy reunion if they go missing.

Holiday hazards

Many pets become extremely stressed during fireworks displays. Keep them indoors, close windows and curtains, and play calming music if needed. Make sure your yard is secure to prevent escape attempts caused by fear. In extreme cases, your veterinarian can prescribe safe calming medication to help pets cope with severe anxiety during fireworks season.

Heat safety

Kimberley’s summer temperatures can be severe. Ensure pets have constant access to shade and cool drinking water. Never leave animals in vehicles, not even for a short time.

Travel safety

If travelling with pets, use secure carriers or harnesses, make frequent rest stops, and ensure that pets are fit for travel. Take their vaccination cards, medication, and enough food for the trip.

Healthy holiday treats

Many festive foods — such as chocolate, cooked bones, alcohol, and xylitol-containing products —are dangerous for pets. Keep all harmful foods and decorations (like tinsel, ribbons, and plastic packaging) out of reach.

Emergency preparedness

Leave clear written instructions about your pet's medication, feeding routine, and special needs with their caregiver.

Make sure you have all the necessary emergency numbers at hand in case you require assistance for your animal during the holidays.

Keep your emergency veterinarian’s number easily accessible.

Remember that the SPCA is available 24/7 for animal emergencies. The Kimberley SPCA’s emergency number is 082 376 7679.

Please note that the SPCA does not have its own veterinarian; it relies on local private vets when animals require medical attention. Keep this in mind when approaching the SPCA for assistance with treatments, especially during after-hours or peak holiday periods.
