IT WAS STILL early in my working career that I managed to get my hands on my very first car. The make and model is not important right now, but I called it my Batmobile, and I loved this vehicle.

However, being a 20-something with some extra cash, I was always wondering if there wasn’t a way to make the old Batmobile look a bit … “cooler”.

I would look at the shape of the lights, the slope of the bonnet and other features, and in my mind, I made plans to customise my car – using accessories from other makes and models – so that it would be truly unique, a one of a kind.

But, I have to admit, welding, panel beating and slathering on, and then sanding off, body putty didn’t seem like such an attractive option. Besides, friends warned me about compatibility of light clusters, fuses being overloaded, and poorly done body work failing after a number of years.

Eventually, I kept the Batmobile as standard as the day I bought it, and enjoyed many happy miles.

The thing is, I always wondered what if I had been able to customise my car? Over time customising workshops started popping up all over. But by that time, I had moved on. I told myself, that if the manufacturers wanted the Batmobile to look different, they would have built it that way.

And guess what, just three decades later, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) is doing just that … with the company announcing that they will be introducing Hilux Custom Builds – a fully integrated conversion programme that brings professionally engineered, purpose-built solutions directly into the Toyota product offering.

Developed entirely in-house, tested to OEM standards and delivered through the national dealer network, these conversions eliminate the traditional reliance on aftermarket fitment and give customers a seamless, factory-backed alternative.

Factory-backed … that means no failing repairs after a few thousand miles.

Built for South African conditions

Each build begins with a dedicated flat-deck Hilux 2.4 GD-6 (4X2 or 4X4) base unit. Working within Toyota Motor Corporation’s CVPP (Conversion Vehicle Partner Programme) framework, Toyota engineers have developed a range of configurations from first principles, ensuring structural integrity, compatibility and long-term durability.

All builds are evaluated under South African conditions to ascertain that they meet the same quality, reliability and performance expectations as the vehicles themselves.

The result is a Hilux that extends its value far beyond its standard form. Customers can select from conversions such as steel or aluminium dropsides, cargo rails with optional dropsides, full or field-technician canopies, and drybox solutions for secure equipment storage.

These options cater to industries that rely on practical, reliable workhorses – whether in agriculture, mining, construction, field service or logistics.

A consistent quality benchmark

What sets Hilux Custom Builds apart is the integrated nature of the offering. Every conversion is designed by Toyota engineers, tested to original equipment standards and supported by the brand’s three-year / 100,000 km warranty, which mirrors that of the base vehicle.

This alignment provides customers with a consistent quality benchmark and simplifies ownership by ensuring all elements of the vehicle fall under a single support umbrella.

The programme also streamlines procurement.

Conversions can be ordered with the vehicle and delivered as a complete, ready-to-work unit, removing the delays and uncertainties associated with third-party installations. Because the conversion is invoiced with the Hilux itself, its full value is recognised in future resale, offering customers a more transparent and predictable ownership cycle.

Hilux Custom Builds are now available through Toyota’s official accessories and fleet dealer network. For pricing, compatibility details or assistance in configuring a solution suited to your operational needs, customers can engage directly with their nearest Toyota Fleet or Accessories representative.

With Hilux Custom Builds, Toyota offers a practical, intelligently engineered solution that brings greater efficiency, consistency and confidence to businesses that rely on their vehicles every day.

All this is truly exciting, but I still wonder if there’s a company selling custom built Batmobiles these days.
