AS THE year draws to a close, many of us look forward to sunshine, travel, and well-deserved rest. However, for pet owners, it's essential to prioritise planning for your furry friend's holiday care. With December being the busiest time of year for kennels, catteries, and pet sitters, it's crucial to book early.

According to Marycke Ackhurst, pet behaviour expert from Hill's Pet Nutrition, "Early planning for your pet's holiday arrangements ensures peace of mind for you and reduces stress for your pet. December is the busiest time of year for kennels, catteries, and pet sitters, so bookings need to be made well in advance."

Key considerations for pet holiday planning

Book early: Secure your pet's spot at a boarding kennel, cattery, or with a trusted sitter to avoid last-minute stress. With approximately 175 registered pet boarding services across South Africa, options are available, but booking in advance is vital.

Do your research: Visit kennels or catteries in person, looking for clean facilities, adequate space, and warm staff interactions. For sitters, arrange a meet-and-greet beforehand to ensure your pet feels comfortable.

Prepare your pet: Ease the transition with a trial day or introduction visit. Sending familiar items like their bed or favourite toy can also help them feel secure.

Keep medical care up to date: Ensure your pet’s vaccinations are current and discuss with your veterinarian whether specialised nutrition or stress-reducing dietary options might support their overall well-being.

Factor in festive stressors: Provide a safe, quiet space for your pet to retreat to during fireworks, parties, or visitors. Ensure your house sitter knows your fireworks protocols.

Plan for emergencies: Share your vet's contact details and provide clear instructions about diet, medication, and routines.

By planning and considering your pet's needs, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable holiday season for both you and your furry friend. As Ackhurst concludes, "The earlier you prepare your pet's holiday care, the smoother and less stressful the festive season will be, for both you and your pet."
