In celebration of Women’s Day, a unique initiative has been launched to support and uplift women entrepreneurs from the Namaqua region. Aptly named “The 9th Table,” the event gave 10 local women-owned businesses the chance to pitch their ventures to a panel of judges, competing for funding and long-term development opportunities.
Funded by Kangnas Wind Farm, the initiative was inspired by the critical role women play in shaping society and aimed to give them both a literal and figurative seat at the table. The platform offered participants an opportunity to showcase their ideas, gain access to resources, and be recognised as changemakers in their communities.
Rouchet Daniels, Economic Development Manager for Kangnas Wind Farm, explained: “This initiative aligns closely with our broader mission of sustainable community development. It focuses on growing businesses through asset-based development, recognising the potential within communities and helping individuals shape their futures.”
The competition’s top three pitches secured cash prizes of R20,000, R10,000, and R5,000, along with valuable mentorship and business training to help participants strengthen their enterprises beyond the event.
One of the winners, Shelly Sauls, founder of Nababeep-based Enigma Services and Solutions, shared how the award will transform her photography business: “This support is not just funding; it’s an investment in my growth. It allows me to deliver higher-quality work, market my services better, and build a sustainable business.”
For many women in the Namaqua region, access to funding, mentorship, and formal business training can be limited. By addressing these challenges, The 9th Table is helping women turn micro-enterprises into sustainable businesses — creating a ripple effect of empowerment and economic growth across their communities.
