SOUTH African rugby is in mourning after the shock news that Springbok number 780 Bevin Fortuin had passed away at the age of 46 on Thursday.

According to reports, Fortuin, who coached Limpopo side Northam Rhinos, suffered a heart attack before a practice session.

Northam Rhinos confirmed Fortuin’s passing on their Facebook page, writing: “With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved head coach, Bevin Fortuin.

“The Northam Rhinos Rugby Club, along with our president Mr. Gonsalves, CEO Mr. Dunne, the executive team, and the entire Zondereinde community, extend our deepest condolences to his wife, young son, and family.

“Bevin’s immense contributions, both on and off the field, leave an immeasurable legacy. Our community feels his loss deeply, but heaven is richer for his presence. We salute you, Bevin Fortuin, Springbok no. 780, for the profound impact you made on the @Northam Rhinos and the Setaria and Zondereinde communities. Rest easy , Champ.”

Fortuin played two Test matches for South Africa, making his debut in 2006 against Ireland at Landsdowne Road, Dublin.

His second game for the Boks would come a year later in the Tri Nations (Rugby Championship) against Australia in Sydney.

Fortuin, born and bred in the Southern Cape town of George, will be best remembered for his exploits in the colours of the Cheetahs, helping the Free State outfit win three Currie Cup titles from 2005 to 2007, with the 2006 title shared with the Bulls after a draw.

The fullback also featured prominently for the Bloemfontein outfit in Super Rugby before returning to his home union, the South Western District Eagles, where he played in the Currie Cup First Division up until retirement.

Fortuin made the move to coaching, helping the Eagles alongside head coach Johan Lerm reach the 2010 Currie Cup First Division final, which his team unfortunately lost 16-12 at home to the Eastern Province Kings.

He would later take over as head coach, although his stint did not last long as the ex-Bok moved on to coaching at the club level with George team, Blanco.
