Best friends Brighton Mhlongo and Oupa Manyisa agree on almost everything. Except, of course when their teams Sundowns and Pirates face-off against each other.

A friendship built on shared dreams, endless football debates, and years of PSL battles—this is the bond between Brighton Mhlongo and Oupa Manyisa. They see eye to eye on almost everything, except when Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns clash.
This weekend, as Pirates prepare to host league leaders Sundowns, the rivalry won’t just be on the pitch. It will play out between these two best friends, each backing their former teams with unwavering loyalty.
Mhlongo, a former Pirates goalkeeper, insists that despite Manyisa’s time at Sundowns, his heart still beats for the Buccaneers.“Oupa might have played for Sundowns, but deep down, his blood will always be black and white,” Mhlongo shares.
Manyisa, who played for both clubs, politely disagrees. “Our friendship goes way back to our academy days, and we agree on most things. But when it comes to Pirates vs. Sundowns, we’re on opposite sides. I respect both teams, but my loyalty is with Sundowns. They play beautiful football, and I believe they’ll win.”
Despite their friendly rivalry, both can’t wait for kick-off on Sunday.
The highly anticipated fixture will take place at FNB Stadium on Sunday, 16 March, at 15:30, airing live on Showmax Premier League.Mhlongo expects Pirates to come out fighting after their first-round defeat. “Pirates lost heavily away, so they’ll be out for redemption. I predict a Pirates win.”
Manyisa has a different take. “Sundowns will win 2-0, with Lucas Ribeiro scoring. They started the season slowly but have gained momentum, leading the Betway Premiership with a 16-point gap. They’re dominant because of their belief in their players, technical staff, and system.
”While Sundowns lead the league, Mhlongo is proud of Pirates’ season. “This team reminds me of the 2002/03 title-winning squad. Under Don Jose, they’ve shown hunger, resilience, and a winning mentality. They’ve cemented their place in the club’s history.”
When asked about standout players, he highlights Makhehleni Makhaula, Sipho Chaine, and Mohau Nkota. As a former goalkeeper, he also praises Pirates’ goalkeeping department. “Sipho has grown into one of the best keepers to wear the Pirates jersey, and Melusi Buthelezi plays a vital supporting role.

This could feel like a Nedbank Cup or Champions League final.”Manyisa, unfortunately, won’t be there. “I’d love to, but I’ll be in Kimberley.”
Regardless of the outcome, Mhlongo promises one thing—he’ll be calling Manyisa after the final whistle. “Pirates have fought hard all season. I love their passion, and I expect a win on Sunday.”
