GQ: What inspired you to collaborate with an African startup, given your journey as an American athlete with deep African roots?

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (JOK): My collaboration with PayAngel is deeply personal. It stems from a shared mission—connecting African diaspora communities with their roots. As an African American with strong ties to the continent, I understand the importance of making it easier for people to support their families, businesses, and investments back home.

Fashion becomes an act of reclaiming that history, honoring what was lost or suppressed.

Film, particularly through an African lens, takes this narrative further. It doesn’t just showcase the aesthetics of our clothing; it immerses audiences in the vibrant textures, colors, and craftsmanship behind each piece. It tells a deeper story—one of identity and pride. PayAngel’s role is crucial here. By eliminating financial barriers, it enables the continued support of African artisans, creators, and entrepreneurs.

GQ: You have a strong appreciation for fashion. What was it like working with La Falaise Dion on this project?

Working with La Falaise Dion is always an incredible experience. She deeply understands how fashion serves as a conduit for cultural expression. Her work embodies the spirit of Africa—not just the soil, but the soul of the continent. The way she tells a story through textiles is nothing short of remarkable. Wearing her designs, which reflect the diversity of African cultures, was both a privilege and a statement of pride.

GQ: How do you see your role in this project shaping the global sports community’s perception of African heritage?

JOK: This project is a chance to raise awareness within the global sports community about Africa’s thriving heritage. Sports is a unifier, and I see this as an opportunity to show that athletes—especially those of African descent—have a responsibility not just to represent themselves, but to uplift their roots.

I hope this inspires more athletes to embrace their heritage and use their platforms for meaningful change, promoting the cultures that shaped them.

GQ: You engaged with artisans from Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana. How did that experience impact your perspective on African craftsmanship?

JOK: It was eye-opening. The depth of talent and tradition across Africa is astonishing. These artisans are the backbone of our culture. Through PayAngel, we’re not just showcasing their work—we’re providing financial solutions that help their businesses grow. This reinforced my belief that with the right infrastructure, we can elevate African artistry to a global level while preserving its authenticity.

GQ: How do you think this campaign empowers African communities, particularly the artisans involved?

JOK: Visibility is everything. By showcasing their work on a global stage, we’re opening doors to markets they might not have had access to before. But beyond the economic empowerment, it instills a sense of pride. Seeing their craftsmanship appreciated worldwide validates their cultural significance. It’s a form of cultural exchange that strengthens entire communities by celebrating their artistry.

GQ: What went into preparing for the visual narrative of this campaign, and what was your most memorable moment?

JOK: I fully immersed myself in the cultures we showcased—learning the history, symbols, and meanings behind each tapestry. Understanding the campaign’s vision was key, especially how my role as an athlete could amplify its message.

The most memorable moment? Witnessing the artisans’ reactions to their work being featured on such a grand scale. Their joy was a powerful reminder of the impact we’re making.

GQ: This project highlights the fusion of tradition and technology. Why is this blend important, especially for younger generations?

It’s crucial, especially in Africa, where the youth make up a significant portion of the population. Young people are at a crossroads between heritage and modern innovation. Technology isn’t meant to replace culture—it’s a tool to preserve and expand it. PayAngel is a perfect example of how tech can enhance tradition, making it easier to stay connected to our roots while fostering economic growth.

GQ: What message do you hope people take from this campaign—both in Africa and globally?

JOK: I want people to walk away with a deeper appreciation for Africa’s contributions—not just in resources but in culture, art, and innovation. Africa’s story is rich, vibrant, and deeply influential. I hope this campaign inspires more people to embrace their heritage and take pride in their roots.

GQ: Looking back on this collaboration, what has been the most fulfilling aspect for you personally?

GQ: Reconnection. As someone existing between two worlds—African and American—this project allowed me to harmonize those identities in a meaningful way.

Every interaction, every piece of art, every garment I wore was a reminder of my legacy and my responsibility to help shape the future.

This journey has reinforced my belief that we are all part of something much greater, and we have the power to build a new legacy for generations to come.
