Nigerian singer, and rapper Godson Ogaga Essi aka Savage Tha Beast made his official entry into the music scene last year and his Afro-fusion music is gaining traction and popularity across the globe.
Influenced by legends like Fela Kuti, 2face, Tiwa Savage, Marvin Gaye, and Bob Marley, the 28-year-old rapper, songwriter, says he is “not done” yet and still wants to work with some of the biggest stars in the game.
He says someday he’d like to work with, Kodak black and Asap Rocky as he believes that “I could be a combination of both and we could make something magical.”
The Uzere, Delta State, born singer began making music with a group of friends at the age of 16, forming a band called "Team Nawty."
But he broke away from the group to focus on his fashion label Savage Space. After taking a hiatus, he reignited his passion for music and formally launched his solo career last year.
Throughout his career, Savage collaborated with some of Africa's top creatives, including Emtee, Victony, D Will Dreamz, and Jay Teazer, to name a few.
He says, “I first started music with a group of friends and we were all teenagers. Back then, even though we weren’t the best talents, we still gave a great show and had the crowd go crazy!”
His parents' fashion background and his upbringing between Nigeria and South Africa shaped his musical niche as he released his highly recommended 10-track debut album, "Utopia" last year.
It is however his exciting sophomore album, "That Uzere Boy" that put him among some of the greatest rap artist of this generation on the continent.
On the album, Savage features musical geniuses such as DJ Maphorisa and Blxckie on fan favourite hit song “Majo.”
The song is an Afro-piano infused dance banger that skilfully integrates the local Amapiano sound with vibey Afro-beat rhythms.
“MAJO has a unique vibe to it. My team and I had to reach out to Blxckie and Dj Maphorisa because we wanted a South African vibe added to the track to give it just the extra spice we needed,” says the rapper. “I especially love the diversity in language. It was great working with those great talents on this particular track.”
Savage spends most of his time travelling throughout Africa, creating music, visuals and developing his clothing line.
Coming from, Uzere, Delta State, Savage is a proud Nigerian representing his country and is an inspiration to all young artists from the west African country and fellow Africans.
He says his fondest memory so far has been “the making of concussion” one of many songs that have went viral and become the new classic song to enjoy on the album.
"Concussion" was released through Savage Space. And with lots of his releases still gaining many streams and commendations for jobs well done, Savage keeps on satisfying his beautiful fan base with impressive songs.
He says another project is already in the pipeline, but while they are work on it, everyone should anticipate nothing short of a masterpiece.
“There has been immense growth from how I made music then and now,” says Savage. “I have been able to identify the style of music that best resonates with me and this, I believe makes it easier to spot out what extra stuff is needed make my music even better.”
The singer further alluded that if he had not been making music, he’d still be in showbiz as an actor or working behind the scenes.
“I love entertainment and I most definitely love to give a great show.”
He concludes by giving advice to upcoming artist and creatives.
“Patience, openness to criticism, resilience, meet people that are relevant to your art, stay true to yourself,” he says. “Truth is, not everyone is going to get blown from your first track and that’s fine; I believe that with the aforementioned elements, any good talent can make something worth it. Never give up, nothing is unattainable,” adds the rapper.
