When it comes to speeding tickets, not all vehicles are created equal. A recent study by Conboy Law Injury & Medical Malpractice Lawyers uncovers the car models that have the highest likelihood of getting their drivers pulled over for speeding violations.
The team analyzed over 100 different car models, scrutinizing the traffic data for speeding violations over the last four years.
Some cars are just more prone to speeding than others, and it’s not always about driver behavior.
The study, based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), compares car safety ratings alongside their popularity and frequency in traffic violations.
Topping the list is the Chevrolet Pickup, with a staggering 71,405 speeding violations in the last four years. That’s a hefty 10.5% of all speeding-related offenses during this period.
The Chevy Pickup is also the most popular vehicle in this category, boasting more than 6.5 million online searches, making it a vehicle that’s hard to miss on the roads.
"Trucks like these, with their size and power, are often harder to control at high speeds, especially in a rush," says a spokesperson from Conboy Law. "They make up a significant portion of traffic violations due to their sheer presence on the road."
In second place, we have the Buick Roadmaster, whose drivers tallied 55,900 speeding violations. While this number is lower than the Chevrolet Pickup’s by about 15,000, it still represents a significant 7.5% of all speeding offenses.
However, when it comes to safety, the Buick Roadmaster doesn’t shine quite as brightly, earning a 4.0 safety score for adult passengers.
This could be an important factor for those who drive it at high speeds—especially when compared to the safer models that follow in the rankings.
Third on the list is the Chrysler Voyager, with 51,200 speeding violations. This model accounts for 7.5% of speeding infractions in the last four years. What sets the Voyager apart is its superior safety rating—scoring a solid 5 for adult passenger protection, which is noticeably higher than the Buick Roadmaster.
"A balance between speed and safety is crucial," the Conboy Law spokesperson continues. "While the Voyager might see more violations, its safety ratings show that it’s better equipped for protecting its passengers during those moments of high-speed driving."
Not far behind, in fourth place, is another Chevrolet—this time the Suburban, with 50,400 speeding violations. While it shares a similar percentage of speeding offenses with the Chrysler Voyager (7%), it is twice as popular, generating over 3.3 million online searches.
Though it’s a larger vehicle, the Suburban also ranks well in terms of safety, though not as much as the Voyager. Still, its sheer presence on the roads makes it a frequent player in speeding violations.
Fifth place goes to the Dodge Neon, with 46,409 speeding violations, making up 6.8% of all speeding offenses. However, unlike the Chevrolet or Chrysler models, the Neon falls short in terms of safety, earning only a 4.2 safety score. This indicates that while its drivers may be more likely to exceed speed limits, they may not have the protection needed in the event of an accident.
At number six, the Lexus RC recorded over 45,400 speeding violations, representing 6.5% of all traffic infractions over the past four years. It may not be as popular as the likes of the Suburban or Voyager, but it still garners a decent number of speeding tickets. Despite being less likely to speed, this luxury car offers solid safety for passengers, with a 4.5 safety score.
Seventh on the list is the Pontiac Bonneville, with 42,900 speeding violations. It’s one of the less popular cars in the rankings, with only 387,400 online searches, yet its drivers seem to have a penchant for speeding. The Bonneville may not be as prevalent on the road, but it holds its ground in terms of traffic violations.
In eighth place is the Lincoln Continental, which saw 34,400 speeding violations, despite having a similar search frequency to the Chrysler Voyager (1.7 million searches). The Continental does have a safety advantage over some of the others, earning a 4.9 safety score—though it’s still not as high as the Voyager or Suburban.
Ninth on the list is the Acura CL, with its drivers racking up over 35,900 speeding violations. Despite only accounting for 5.3% of all speeding offenses, the Acura CL still lands in the top ten, further proving that even more "subtle" vehicles are not immune to speeding habits.
Finally, rounding out the list is the Chevrolet Tracker, with 34,200 speeding violations. Although it only makes up 5% of total speeding infractions, it still deserves a mention.
Unfortunately, its safety score isn’t quite as high as the Lincoln Continental or Chevrolet Pickup, further emphasizing the importance of vehicle safety when driving at speed.
As Conboy Law’s spokesperson aptly concludes, "Speeding tickets are a reflection of the broader issue of road safety. It’s not just about the car; it’s about the driver’s awareness and control."
The data from this study clearly shows that larger vehicles, particularly trucks and SUVs, are more likely to be involved in speeding violations. Whether it’s the Chevrolet Pickup, the Buick Roadmaster, or the Chrysler Voyager, vehicle size and safety features play a critical role in how these cars fare in traffic.
In the end, regardless of the vehicle you drive, staying mindful of your speed can prevent accidents and keep you—and everyone else on the road—safe.
