Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) recorded a 3% year-on-year increase in passenger arrivals in December, signalling growing confidence in Cape Town as a premier global destination.
Cape Town - The Mother City’s status as the world's best city is reflected in impressive tourist arrival numbers, with Cape Town International Airport recording over 533 000 visitors and significant growth across international, regional, and domestic travel sectors.
On the back of Cape Town being recently named the Best City in the World by “Time Out”, Cape Town Tourism announced that regional travel saw an impressive 22.5% jump, and international arrivals climbed by 3.7%, showing that Cape Town’s reputation as a world-class destination is stronger than ever.
They said Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) recorded a 3% year-on-year increase in passenger arrivals in December, signalling growing confidence in Cape Town as a premier global destination.
With 533 829 arrivals, the numbers align with forecasted growth, showcasing a strong festive season for one of Africa’s top destinations.
Cape Town Tourism shared that international arrivals numbers reached 160 537 (+3.7%), while regional arrivals rose to 10 491 (+22.5%) and domestic arrivals to 362 222 (+2.3%)
They added that the most notable growth came from regional arrivals, which surged by 22.5%, underscoring Cape Town’s appeal to neighbouring countries.
“International arrivals increased by 3.7%, while domestic travel, which accounts for the most considerable portion of passenger numbers, grew by 2.3%,” they explained.
James Vos, mayco member for Economic Growth, said enhanced air connectivity is crucial in boosting tourism.
“Cape Town’s ongoing partnerships with airlines and the introduction of more frequent flights, including key seasonal routes, have been game-changers for our tourism sector,” said Vos.
“This enhanced air access not only makes it easier for travellers to visit our city but also strengthens Cape Town’s position as a leading destination as shown by the positive arrival figures this December.”
Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, said he was positive about Cape Town’s tourism numbers.
“These numbers show the growing confidence in Cape Town as a destination that draws visitors from all corners.
“With enhanced air access and our city’s unmatched appeal, from locals rediscovering their home to international travellers exploring our world-famous attractions, Cape Town is a favourite for many.”
They added that while Cape Town was recently named the Best City in the World by Time Out, it consistently ranked among the top global travel destinations.
This growth reaffirms the city’s leadership in tourism and highlights its position as a hub for inclusive, sustainable, and responsible travel experiences.
