Cape Town - The Cape Town CBD is expected to be a hive of activity this weekend as the HSBC SVNS Rugby tournament sets the stage for excitement on and off the field.
The tournament also plans to make history by attempting to break the world record attempt for the largest Amapiano dance-off at a rugby match.
The Blitzboks and 23 other best men’s and women’s sevens teams will play-off at the DHL Stadium tomorrow and Sunday.
The SA team plays its first game at 11.44am tomorrow against Ireland, and will be closing the show for the day with a clash against Argentina at 18.41pm.
The competition will also feature the Olympic gold medal winning French team and New Zealand women’s teams, among the 12 teams in each competition, as well as Olympic sensations such as the USA women’s and Fijian men’s teams.
The City’s mayco member for safety and security JP Smith, said the tournament was one of the metro’s premier events and all systems were in place.
“It’s going to be a fun-filled weekend of rugby, dancing and music and I am looking forward to a spectacular show.
“I encourage ticket holders to plan their days and routes to the stadium.
“Residents and commuters who usually make use of roads in the area are also advised to take note of closures,” Smith said.
Led by the two-time world hip-hop champions, Cape Town’s own Street Stylers, fans are invited to dress-up and be part of the “Amapiano #NoDNA JustRSA” dance on Sunday.
The group has hosted public workshops throughout the city over the last month to teach fans the dance ahead of the world record attempt.
Smith said as a result of the event, a number of roads in and around the Green Point precinct would be closed, resulting in traffic congestion.
Spectators are encouraged to make use of the free MyCiTi shuttle to the stadium.
“Those making use of the bus can find parking at the CTICC (paid parking), the Civic Centre and on-street parking,” said Smith.
“At the Civic Centre, the City will open its 475 parking bays for ticketed rugby fans on a first-come, first-served basis from 7.30am. The parking areas are accessible from Hertzog Boulevard incoming and on Civic Road.”
