Desmond Schonegevel, a distinguished figure in South African cricket, was born on October 9, 1934, in Bloemfontein. His illustrious first-class cricket career spanned over two decades, during which he played 100 matches between 1954 and 1977.
A poignant part of the recent Veterans Cricket Association of SA’s National Club Championships, was the tournament’s celebration of the memory of Desmond Schonegevel, affectionately known as “Uncle Des”.
Uncle Des’s contribution to veterans’ cricket was honoured throughout the event, adding a sentimental touch to the championship.

Representing Griqualand West and Orange Free State as a right-handed batsman and right-arm off-spin bowler, Schonegevel amassed 5,168 runs and took 118 wickets. His career highlights include a top score of 151 for Orange Free State against Border and his best bowling figures of 6/29 for Griqualand West, also against Border.
Schonegevel captained Orange Free State from 1962 to 1965 and later led Griqualand West, earning a reputation as a strong leader both on and off the field.
Beyond his playing days, Schonegevel’s influence extended to coaching and administration, particularly in Griqualand West and the Northern Cape. A key figure in the development of Yorkshire Cricket Club in Galeshewe, Kimberley, he was instrumental in unifying racially divided cricket organisations as the first chairperson of Griqualand West Cricket following the unity movement in 1991.
His contributions to the sport in South Africa were immense, helping to shape the future of cricket in the region.
In addition to his work in cricket, Schonegevel co-founded Desnics Planet Sport, a sporting goods business in Kimberley, further cementing his legacy as a passionate advocate for all manner of sports in the community.
Uncle Des passed away on July 6, 2021, in Kimberley, leaving behind a profound legacy in South African sport. His sons, Wayne and Shane Schonegevel, continued his sporting tradition, representing Griqualand West in cricket and hockey, respectively.
Wayne opened the batting for the Griqualand West cricket team during his Matric year, while Shane excelled as a hockey goalkeeper, going on to represent South Africa.
Meanwhile, Uncle Des’s lifelong dedication to cricket and his pivotal role in shaping the sport will be fondly remembered by many in the South African cricketing community.
