William Edward Oliver, lovingly known as Billy, passed away on July 7, 2023, at the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley.

Born on September 17 1954, in Kimberley, Billy lived a full and remarkable life, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy that will endure.

Billy was the beloved son of the late Eric Reginald ‘Bushy’ Oliver, a well-known figure in Kimberley, and especially Griquas rugby, who instilled in his son a love for sports and a spirit of determination. During his school years, Billy exhibited great talent in rugby, excelling as an eighthman. His athletic abilities extended beyond rugby, as he followed in his father’s footsteps and developed a passion for boxing at the tender age of 12.

Under the tutelage of his father, Bushy, a renowned boxer himself, Billy honed his skills and eventually established his own boxing club in Kimberley.

A crowning moment in his boxing career came when he triumphed as an amateur boxer, winning all the old Transvaal boxing titles – an accomplishment that filled his father’s heart with immense pride.

After completing his schooling, Billy pursued a career in law enforcement, serving as a police officer on the Rhodesian border. Tragically, he suffered a debilitating injury to his back in a landmine explosion, which altered the course of his life.

Returning to Kimberley, Billy embarked on a successful career as a salesman, where his natural charm, dedication, and persuasive skills made him the epitome of excellence. His sister proudly attested that Billy was widely regarded as the best salesman in Kimberley; he earned numerous accolades for his outstanding achievements.

His genuine warmth and friendly demeanour endeared him to all who crossed his path, earning him the respect and admiration of his peers and the wider community.

Known for his chivalry and charm, Billy, like his father, possessed a true gentleman’s spirit, always extending a chivalrous gesture of kissing the hands of the ladies he encountered. When he wasn’t busy with his endeavours, Billy enjoyed spending time with his friends, engaging in friendly games of pool, and creating cherished memories.

Family was of utmost importance to Billy.

He leaves behind his loving daughter and two sons, who will forever carry his legacy in their hearts. His only sister had the honour of being by his side during the last three months of his life, providing much needed support and companionship.

Billy’s unshakeable spirit and unwavering resilience were evident throughout his life. Faced with adversity and challenges, he embraced them with courage and determination. When he faced problems, his favourite phrase “nothing critical” became a mantra that encapsulated his optimistic outlook and ability to overcome obstacles.

Billy’s departure leaves a void in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered as a dedicated sportsman, a charismatic salesman, and a true gentleman.

His memory will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched.

As we bid farewell to Billy, we find solace in knowing that he rests in peace. May his soul find eternal serenity in the embrace of our Father in Heaven. Though he may no longer be with us, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Billy will be dearly missed, but his legacy will endure, serving as a reminder of a life well lived and a remarkable man who touched the lives of many.

The funeral service of the late William Edward ‘Billy’ Oliver will be held on Monday, July 17 at 10am at the Volle Evangelie Kerk on the corner of Waterworks and Meyer Streets in Kimberley.

Rest in peace, Billy.
