In Round six of the Currie Cup, the HollywoodBets Sharks secured a commanding 40-21 victory over the Suzuki Griquas in Durban, marking the hosts’ second win of the 2024 season.

The Sharks outscored their opponents from the Diamond City by six tries to three, in what turned out to be a dominant performance.

Springbok scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse, making his return after a four-month absence, opened the scoring with a try. Young hooker Ethan Bester, a late inclusion in the Sharks’ line-up, also contributed a five-pointer.

The hosts dominated possession early on, with Hakeem Kunene and Eduan Keyter adding to the scoreboard through well-executed backline plays. Jannes Potgieter and Jurenzo Julius extended the lead, with Julius snatching a loose ball to race away for his team’s fifth try just before halftime.

Griquas fought back in the second half, with captain Sango Xamlashe and Dylan Maart scoring tries to bring them within striking distance. However, the Sharks responded with Bester powering over from a maul in the 63rd minute, sealing the win.

Griquas will also rue the fact that the match ended on a negative note for them when replacement Hanru Sirgel was shown a red card for dangerous play.

As for the Sharks, their strong performance and disciplined play throughout the match secured a well-deserved win, keeping them in the running in the Currie Cup.
