THE LIONS and the Bulls are the early pacesetters in the Currie Cup and the only unbeaten teams after three rounds of the competition.

Western Province earned their first win with a resounding victory in Welkom over the struggling Griffons, while the Sharks are still winless under new coach JP Pietersen.

The Bulls entertained the Cheetahs in Pretoria on Friday night and it was a two-try burst from wing Henry Immelman that paved the way for their hard-fought defeat of the current champions.

The final scoreline of 25-13 was a repeat of the earlier game at Ellis Park where the Lions laboured to a win over the gritty Griquas.

The Lions started well before Griquas hit back only for ill-discipline to allow the Lions to finish strongly. Lions captain Jaco Visagie said his team’s performance was from their best.

“I am happy with the win, but I am not happy with how we played.

“There are plenty of areas where we should have been better, like at the breakdown and scrums.

“So we still have a lot of work to do,” said Visagie.

Also on Friday, the Sharks slumped to their third defeat on the trot when they lost 31-21 to the Pumas in Durban.

Pietersen’s team of mostly youngsters started woefully, conceding two tries soon after the kick-off, but they fought back in the second half to salvage some honour.

In Welkom, meanwhile,, Province were too strong for the Griffons, demolishing the Northern Free Staters 64-15, with centre Jonathan Roche bagging a hat-trick.

This Friday, the Griffons host the Cheetahs and Griquas travel to the Pumas. On Saturday, the Lions host the Sharks and the Bulls are at home against Western Province.
