All the way from Pretoria, the Hoërskool Garsfontein cricket captain Xander Venter says his team will not only be competing for the top prize, but will also be using the Diamantveld T20 Cricket Festival to prepare his ‘Garsies’ team for upcoming tournaments.

Venter shared his thoughts on the current tournament with the DFA and outlined the team’s ongoing goals. “This tournament helps us get ready for the Wildeklawer Cricket Tournament and SA20. We’re focused on playing an attacking brand of cricket,” Venter said.

At Garsfontein, the cricket team’s mantra is “Cool in the head, Fire in the heart”, a guiding principle that Venter believes gives them a competitive edge.

“It helps us stay calm in tense situations while still playing with passion and intensity,” Venter shared with the DFA. “Slowing down the pace of the game allows us to think clearly and avoid rushed decisions in high-pressure moments,” he added.

Looking even further ahead to the Wildeklawer Cricket Tournament, Venter expressed his enthusiasm. “I am extremely excited about the Wildeklawer and can’t wait to get started! The pitches in Pretoria and Kimberley are quite similar, so we’re expecting quick surfaces.

“The heat in the Northern Cape might be higher, but we’re ready for the challenge. We also expect quicker outfields due to the conditions.”

For Venter, the tournament holds personal significance as well.

“It’s a huge privilege and honour to be part of such a prestigious tournament. I’m especially excited to play at Hoërskool Diamantveld because my dad went to school there, and he played for their first rugby team in 1993 and 1994.”

The Diamantveld T20 Cricket Festival is set to offer an exciting debut for Garsfontein as they aim to make their mark on the national stage.
