City proud to host All African Tug of War Championships

Nine clubs from South Africa, five from Zimbabwe, and three from Lesotho will bring around 300 athletes to compete this year, with each team made up of eight athletes.

KIMBERLEY, the Diamond City of South Africa, is set to make history when it hosts the ninth All African Tug of War Championships at the Pirates Club sports grounds from Thursday, May 4 to Saturday, May 6 2023.

With tug of war in the city undergoing a real revival in recent times, it is exciting that this is the first time that Kimberley will host the event. Spectators are sure to be treated to thrilling displays of raw strength, cunning teamwork and sharp strategy.

Along with the different provincial teams that will make the trip to the city, several African countries will also descend on the Pirates sports grounds to tug it out and see who will be crowned the best of the best.

While six African countries initially committed to participating in the championship, only three have confirmed their attendance. Hosts South Africa, will get to grips with teams from Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

Nine clubs from South Africa, five from Zimbabwe, and three from Lesotho will bring around 300 athletes to compete this year, with each team made up of eight athletes.

The championships kick off on Thursday, May 4, with the youth championships taking place. This includes athletes aged between 18 and 25. On Friday, the African Club Championships will take place, and on Saturday, the International African Championships will be held.

After each event, a medal ceremony will be held for the winners in each section.

The event will also be live-streamed on DigiTv, allowing fans from around the world to watch the action as it unfolds. Food and drink stalls will be available at the Pirates Club sports grounds, creating a festive atmosphere for spectators to enjoy. Kimberley residents are encouraged to attend and support the athletes as they compete for the championship title.

This, the ninth All African Tug of War Championships promises to be a thrilling event, showcasing the best athletes from South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.

It is also an opportunity for Kimberley once again to shine and demonstrate its ability to host major sporting events. The championship also provides a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and compete against the best in the region.
