Simon Liversage, a young talent from Diamantveld High School, is etching his name into the school’s sporting history with exceptional cricketing skills. His cricket journey stands as a testament to hard work, dedication, and a passion for the sport that ignited at a young age.

In an interview with the DFA, Liversage expressed his joy, emphasising that being part of the school’s cricket team fulfilled a dream. He conveyed that such an opportunity produced an incredible feeling within him, viewing it as a privilege earned through hard work and dedication.

Simon’s cricket prowess shone during the Khaja Majola week matches. As an all-rounder in the Under-19 boys’ team, he exuded a natural comfort and confidence. He vividly recalled feeling at ease on the pitches, seeing the ball well, and cleanly striking it from the start of the matches.

His versatility as a top-order batsman and a spin bowler underscored the multifaceted nature of his contributions to the team’s success. Simon revealed that his role extended beyond scoring runs to accurate bowling, taking crucial wickets, and delivering as many dot balls as possible ‒ a strategic approach he brought to the game.

It was on this basis that he earned the title of the all-rounder of the Khaja Majola week and earning him a spot on the SA Colts team that took on the SA Schools team. However, despite their best efforts, the SA Colts lost the match, but undeterred, Simon is now focused on securing a spot in the SA U/20 IPL, setting his sights on new opportunities and challenges ahead.

Simon explained, “The balls I bowl are challenging to play because of my height, causing them to bounce higher. My focus is primarily on batting since it is more challenging, and you only get one chance. When it comes to fielding, it’s easy to concentrate because I enjoy it a lot. Bowling requires shorter periods of intense concentration, but there’s not much as satisfying as seeing the stumps fly. Batting remains my favourite, but being involved in all aspects of the game and making an impact makes the match fly by,” he said.

Liversage expressed his gratitude for having excellent coaches since primary school, including legends in cricket circles like Mr. Boon Boonzaier, Arno Boonzaier, André van Wyk, and Thorne Fredericks. At Northern Cape Cricket, Jason Brooker played a crucial role in his development, and Mario (Arthur) at Diamantveld High School is a significant part of his success.

Among his many achievements, a standout moment for Simon was when he scored a remarkable 159 runs against the SWD cricket team. Recalling the match, he described his aggressive batting style, scoring a quick 70 runs during the powerplay and carting bowlers to all sides of the field, making a significant impact on the game.

However, Simon’s love for cricket didn’t start at the school level. From a young age, he found joy in holding a cricket bat and hitting balls over the fence. He credits his childhood idols, such as AB De Villiers, and the guidance of his coaches for nurturing his passion for the sport.

To excel in cricket, Simon dedicates himself to a rigorous training routine, focusing not only on physical fitness but also on mental preparedness. He firmly believes that a balanced approach to training, encompassing both the physical and mental aspects, is vital for achieving success in the sport.

Despite his individual achievements, Simon remains grounded in his belief in teamwork. He emphasizes the importance of unity within the team, stating that success in cricket, despite individual brilliance, is a collective effort that requires everyone’s contribution.

Looking ahead, Simon with his sights set on participating in the SA U/20 IPL is set on contributing to the growing cricketing legacy of Diamantveld High School. His advice to aspiring cricketers reflects his experience: “Work hard, chase your dreams relentlessly, and use criticism as motivation to prove doubters wrong.”

As Simon’s cricketing journey continues to unfold, he is not just a promising talent but an inspiration for his peers. His unwavering dedication, resilience, and strong faith paint a picture of a young sportsman ready to create a lasting legacy in the world of cricket.

“Playing cricket is akin to riding waves. Embrace the opportunity, enjoy the journey, and stay positive even during the calm moments, as the next chance to shine will surely come,” he said, adding, “My motto, inscribed on my cricket bat, is Philippians 4:13 ‘I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.’ ”
